Nowadays, a lot of
people are thinking about losing weight; and wherever you go online
you find ads promoting products that help you lose those extra pounds. Being over-weight
certainly has its problems, which are mainly harmful to your health, not just
your image and how you look and fit into clothes!
But, how is that?
Over-weight and obesity increase your risk of developing diseases like diabetes,
high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and some forms of cancers! In
addition to the obvious problems with joints and knees in particular.
Apart from the many
illusions promoted for losing weight, here is what really works...
The Only way to
lose weight is to make your intake of energy less than what you expend!
-
You have to change
you eating habits and start eating healthy, low-fat and low-calorie diets.
-
You have to
exercise more; let's say around 30 min. of moderate exercise on most of the
week days, and daily if possible.
-
You need to do
some behavioral changes; like reducing the inactive time you spend watching
TV, incorporating a more active lifestyle, and staying away from occasions
that make you eat when you don't need to.
-
Make sure you
understand that what you need is a permanent change in your lifestyle, not
just a few months of dieting!
-
Choose a
low-calorie diet that is 500 -1000 kcal less that your usual daily diet.
-
Aim at losing
weight slowly; in the range of 1-2 pounds ( 0.5-1 kg) per
week
-
What you really
need is to lose a 5-10 % of your initial body weight; that will make you
feel better and decrease your risk of developing many diseases.
-
Some medicines
might be useful when used along with the basic steps we talked about, but
seek medical advice before using any to be sure they are suitable for you
and safe to use.
Be ware of the
false promotions you might get. Here are a couple of warning signs to watch for:
-
Anything that
says" the magic solution", or " lose weight without
dieting" etc..
-
Not all herbs
are safe; being natural does not always have to be safe and useful;
check with your pharmacist first.
-
Ads that claim to
help you lose weight fast.
-
Never buy from an unreliable
source!
